A staggering new £11.6bn African metropolis that is being built between two important cities is hoping to transform a country’s fortunes.

Konza Technopolis, often called “Silicon Savannah,” is strategically located 64km (40 miles) south of Nairobi, between Kenya’s two most important cities – Nairobi and Mombasa.

Designed as a high-tech innovation hub, the city aims to boost Kenya’s digital economy and attract global technology firms.

Ken Mwenda, managing director at eMobilis Mobile Technology Academy, told The Guardian: “You need to start somewhere and [Konza] is that somewhere.

“There have been many other disjointed government efforts and initiatives but the scale of this project means that one would have to try hard not to notice that Kenya is seriously committed to its tech industry.”

The city is designed with state-of-the-art ICT networks, smart transport systems and green energy solutions.

Recently, Kenya secured a Ksh.31.1 billion (£191 million) loan from the Korea Eximbank to support infrastructure development at Konza. This funding will help complete crucial projects, including a data center, smart city facilities and intelligent transport systems.

Additionally, Kenya has been actively courting American tech firms to invest in Konza. President William Ruto’s government signed a letter of intent with the US Government to attract major companies.

Despite initial delays since its launch in 2013, Konza Technopolis remains a central part of Kenya’s vision to become a middle-income digital economy by 2030.

The first phase of Konza Technopolis will cover 160 hectares, featuring approximately 13,000 housing units designed to accommodate up to 30,000 residents.

According to its official website, Konza’s population will also have direct access to collected data, which may include traffic maps, emergency warnings and detailed information describing energy and water consumption.

It reads: “The availability of data will enable Konza’s population to participate directly in the operations of the city, practice more sustainable living patterns, and enhance overall inclusiveness.

“By leveraging the smart city framework, Konza will be able to optimize its city services, creating a sustainable city that responds directly to the needs of its residents, workers, and visitors.”

The city’s sustainable design incorporates solar energy, rainwater harvesting and efficient water management to enhance eco-friendly living.

The city will include affordable housing, universities, and student accommodations, complementing its commercial districts, office spaces, hotels and entertainment hubs.
