‘Affordable and excellent’ way to prevent window condensation without using a dehumidifier

Dehumidifiers are one of the most effective ways to prevent excess moisture in the home, but they can be costly to buy.

Instead, window experts at Plan-it Windows have shared various methods, including baking soda.

They explained: “Placing bowls of baking soda on windowsills can significantly reduce moisture.

“It’s affordable and excellent for smaller rooms, absorbing humidity and helping to prevent condensation.

“In more spacious areas, rock salt can be an effective alternative. It absorbs a larger volume of moisture, making it suitable for bigger rooms where condensation is a concern.”

Be careful using rock salt if you do have pets as it can be toxic for them if it is ingested.

As well as using methods to capture the moisture, it is also a good idea to reduce the amount your household produces.

Reducing humidity from showers can greatly impact indoor moisture levels, according to the experts.

They said: “We suggest using moderately warm water and keeping showers brief. Always ventilate the bathroom post-shower by opening a window or using an extractor fan to disperse the moist air.

“Certain plants, like peace lilies and Boston ferns, can also help to reduce humidity levels as they absorb moisture.

“These plants not only aid in controlling humidity but also add an aesthetic touch to your home.”

What’s more, they are great in the bathroom as peace lilies can survive in low light conditions, ideal for a bathroom without any windows.

The window experts continued: “While central heating is essential for comfort, it should be used wisely.

“Opening windows briefly can exchange moist indoor air with drier outdoor air.

“Keep an eye out for indications of excessive moisture, such as water stains or mould growth, especially in less-ventilated areas.

“Spotting these issues early and using some of our simple remedies and stop the problem from escalating.”
