Add 1p ingredient to porridge for ‘life-changing’ flavour

Jam and honey might be the most popular choices when it comes to adding flavour to our porridge in the morning, but one woman claims to have created the ultimate taste sensation – and it’ll only cost you a penny to try yourself.

Carla, who shares budget food tips via TikTok, showcased her unique idea in a video. Holding a box of Yorkshire Tea, she exclaimed: “If you love tea and you’ve not tried putting your tea bag in your porridge, you really must try it.”

Opening up a world of opportunity with many flavoured teas available, Carla disclosed that her personal favourite is Yorkshire Tea’s caramalised biscuit tea bags. “These are my ultimate favourite, but you can use any tea bag,” she explained.

Carla continued to outline the simple recipe, which involves simply adding porridge oats to your bowl, the tea bag, sweetener and water “to allow the tea bag to brew.” She continued: “You then just microwave this for two to three minutes and the tea will kind of exude itself into your porridge.”

Once heated, Carla added a handful of chopped strawberries and whey powder for extra protein – ensuring it’s plain to avoid “overpowering” the taste of the tea – followed by soya crispies and pistachios. “Obviously the gross bit is removing the tea bag,” she admitted.

Carla added: “I really recommend this though – it’s like a way of getting a double-dose of caffeine in the morning. I’m imagining coffee lovers could do the same thing with coffee in their porridge, but think of all the possibilities here.”

She closed with recommendations of Earl Grey or English Breakfast tea porridge. “Has anyone tried peppermint tea porridge?” Carla pondered. “Would that work? Is that a different vibe? Green tea porridge perhaps?”

Carla’s video saw more than 200,000 TikTok users tune in just four days. Many of those were keen to share their thoughts, including one person who penned in response: “Tea-infused porridge? Brilliant idea! How about trying a matcha porridge next?”

A second shared excitedly: “I love these tea bags so will try this! I recommend the Tesco vanilla chai ones too.” Carla replied: ” I’ve never tried chai and would be nervous to waste a whole box. I need to find someone who has it and ‘borrow’ it!”

A third individual declared: “Coffee porridge is so underrated, add instant coffee to the oats and it’s 10/10.” A fourth revealed: “I had some Earl Grey porridge in a hotel in Canada and it’s one of my favourite meals ever so this is right up my street.”

Whilst a fifth TikTok user said: “I like really strong tea so I usually just rip up the teabag and put the tea leaves straight in my oats.” However, Carla hit back: ” Interesting! I don’t like tea leaf texture though.” And a sixth person hailed: “This may be life changing information.”
