Action-packed war film on Netflix that fans say ‘can’t be missed'

A gripping war film that breaks the mould of traditional combat movies is now streaming on Netflix – and fans say it’s one of the most underrated military dramas of the 21st century.

Jarhead, directed by Sam Mendes and based on the bestselling memoir by former U.S. Marine Anthony Swofford, brings a psychological depth to the modern war narrative that’s left viewers calling it “unmissable.”

Released in 2005 and starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jamie Foxx, Jarhead follows Marine sniper Swofford as he trains, deploys, and mentally unravels during the Gulf War. But unlike most war films, Jarhead is not about bullets flying or battles won – it’s about what happens when soldiers are trained to kill, but never get the chance to go to action.

One of the most striking things about Jarhead is that it contains no actual combat scenes. Instead, it focuses on anticipation, frustration, and the psychological toll of waiting.

As one viewer on Rotten Tomatoes explained: “Jarhead is a movie that shows the struggles of war. The movie does this perfectly by having no combat in the entire movie, watching as one soldier slowly slips into madness awaiting combat.”

That internal conflict is portrayed with intensity by Jake Gyllenhaal, who delivers one of his most praised early performances. His portrayal of Swofford captures the disillusionment and paranoia that can build when soldiers are caught in limbo, miles from home and far from any clear mission.

Alongside Gyllenhaal, Jamie Foxx plays the firm but steady Staff Sgt. Sykes, a performance that complements the film’s focus on hierarchy, masculinity, and emotional control. The film also stars Peter Sarsgaard, Lucas Black, and Brian Geraghty.

Critics and audiences alike have praised the cast. One fan wrote: “Good movie. Gyllenhaal is a great actor. Same goes for Jamie Foxx. Ten out of ten.”

Directed by Oscar-winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty, 1917), Jarhead is visually striking and atmospheric, capturing both the vast emptiness of the desert and the claustrophobia of military life.

Roger Deakins, the legendary cinematographer behind No Country for Old Men and Skyfall, delivers stunning imagery throughout.

A must-see for anyone interested in modern miliary films, Jarhead is now streaming on Netflix.
