Yusuf Kayat, 54, received a 20-year prison term in February following his conviction on a harrowing array of 17 offences at Leeds Crown Court. The court was told that from 1989 to 1992, Kayat, also known as ‘Kosh’, targeted the young girl, taking advantage of her in cars and abandoned buildings in Dewsbury and Mirfield.
The predator began his heinous acts with grooming: chauffeuring the victim in his vehicle, lavishing her with presents, and supplying her with alcohol, cigarettes, and cannabis. His crimes escalated to sexual intercourse and forcing the child to engage in sexual activities with his acquaintances, often involving several men, in exchange for takeaway food.
Now an adult, the survivor expressed in her impact statement the lasting terror, anxiety, flashbacks, and panic attacks she endured, labeling the impact of Kayat’s actions as profound and devastating.
Taking action against what was deemed an overly lenient initial punishment, the Solicitor General stepped in, resulting in the Court of Appeal increasing Kayat’s imprisonment. On May 7, his original sentence was annulled and replaced with a lengthier term of 24 years under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme, reports Yorkshire Live.
Solicitor General Lucy Rigby KC MP condemned the offender, stating: “Yusuf Kayat’s crimes were abhorrent. His grooming of the victim was highly calculated, who was only 10 years old when the abuse first began, before carrying out multiple sexual offences over several years.
“I welcome the court’s decision to increase Kayat’s sentence. Today my thoughts are with Kayat’s victim and her family. “.
