Why don’t we call it Oct. 20, 2027? Let’s mark that in the calendar. It is the third Wednesday of the month, likely to be an off day between the league championship series and another World Series the Yankees will not be playing in.
So put it aside so we can hear who will be blamed by Hal Steinbrenner and Brian Cashman, and what part of the team malfunctioned in October this time. And how the goal remains championship or bust. And blah, blah, rinse, repeat, see you in October 2028.
I did not include Aaron Boone, who was part of Wednesday’s three-person pinstriped redundancy bingo card of how much it hurts and how the Yankees had a championship team that didn’t win a championship and how all efforts are now underway to investigate every area to make sure that a title is finally returned to The Bronx next year.
Boone is coming back for his 10th year managing the Yankees and, while Steinbrenner said an extension is something he “definitely would consider,” I see that as about the funniest thing a very serious man has ever said publicly. The Yankees almost always let contracts for their top executives expire before decision time, like Cashman, who said he is in the midst of re-upping with the Yankees to remain as general manager.
