Donald Trump’s recent bust-up with former ally Elon Musk is just the latest in a series of headline-worthy events that have marked his near-six months back in office as US President. Since January, the world leader has destabilised global financial markets with his “liberation day” tariffs, come to blows with foreign counterparts and reshaped the federal government.
His recent migration crackdown also sparked protests against Immigration, Custom and Enforcement (ICE) raids in California, to which Trump has in turn deployed the National Guard and US marines to “impose law and order”. While his return to the White House couldn’t be accused of being boring, the president’s approval rating with voters appears to have dipped, with a Quinnipiac University’s poll conducted June 5-9 among 1,265 registered voters suggesting he lost three points when it comes to favorability compared to data from April, going from 41% to 38%.

Democratic governor of California Gavin Newsom accused Trump of deploying a “military dragnet” of the National Guard across Los Angeles as demonstrations broke out in cities nationwide in response to the administration’s migrant crackdown over the last week.
Protests broke out in California on Friday after dozens of workers were arrested in federal immigration raids.
Thousands of people took to the city’s streets over the weekend, with police responding to cars set on fire and the blocking of a major freeway with rubber bullets and tear gas.
Trump said he would consider invoking the Insurrection Act to counter the protesters, authorising him to deploy military forces within the US for law enforcement or the suppression of violence.
