Campervan drivers targeted with new rule in European destination | Travel News | Travel

British holidaymakers dreaming of a Greek getaway in their campervans could be hit with fines up to £250 for merely parking their home-on-wheels in public spaces. Campervan travel is often seen as a thrifty alternative to pricey hotels, offering the flexibility to roam and the opportunity to wake up to breathtaking views.

But a change in Greek legislation has thrown a spanner in the works for those plotting a picturesque road trip. Authorities have decreed that campervans, caravans and trailers are now restricted to licensed campsites only.

This clampdown means no more overnight stays or pit stops at previously favoured spots like beaches, woodlands, historical sites, or even regular public car parks.

Even private property isn’t exempt from the crackdown; landowners and businesses can’t host more than one campervan unless they’re a sanctioned camping site.

Graham Conway, managing director at Select Car Leasing, warned: “Those found in breach of the rules could face on-the-spot fines of up to €300 (around £250), regardless of whether they’re staying overnight or just taking a break.”

Mr Conway further cautioned that these stringent regulations apply to brief halts too, saying: “These rules don’t just apply to long stays either, if you’re planning a quick trip to a grocery store in your campervan, you won’t be allowed to park the car in the parking lot.”

For those who love the spontaneity of wild camping or casual roadside rests, this news may well be an unwelcome jolt.

Mr Conway said: “Travellers are strongly advised to plan their routes in advance, book spaces at licensed campsites where possible, and avoid the temptation to park in unauthorised spots, even if just for a quick sunset view or a meal on the go.”

However, it’s not just Greece imposing such restrictions; those heading through the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Czech Republic can expect comparable constraints.

In Britain, there’s a patchwork of regulations governing campervan parking that hinge on local policies, so it’s crucial to familiarise yourself with rules specific to your destinations.

This tough line is part of a larger Greek strategy aimed at taming overtourism, reducing environmental harm, and guaranteeing that the infrastructure in sought-after areas can handle ever-increasing tourist throngs.
