Fresh produce can feel like a waste of money sometimes, especially when it goes stale or rots quicker than expected. Fresh herbs can also fall to this problem, but food experts have found a way to save them when they’re on their “last legs”.

Experts at Delish shared a fool-proof way to extend the  shelf life of herbs and make sure you’re getting the most out of their flavour. The culinary experts at Delish urged home cooks not to throw away their herbs. Instead, have a look at what your microwave can do for them.

How to save fresh herbs

Fresh herbs can last anywhere between one to three weeks when stored in the fridge. You’ll have to make sure they’re stored properly to make sure you get the most out of them.

However, if you’ve noticed that your fresh herbs are dwindling, there is a way to make them last longer and give them a new lease of lift. It’s possible to turn fresh herbs into dried herbs, extending their shelf life for years.

Instead they can be dried in the microwave – and it’s so easy to do. Delish said: “Just get a paper towel-lined microwave safe plate.

2Put your herbs in an even layer, and then top it with another paper towel, then microwave for 20 to 30-second increments until the herbs are dry, enough to crumble in your fingers.

“Once the herbs are nice and dry, just grind them and store them in a container in your refrigerator or your pantry.”

Cole and Mason explained that if dried herbs are stored properly, they can last for between one to three years. Exposure to air can dilute the flavour of the herbs, so it’s best to keep them in an airtight container.

It’s also recommended to keep the herbs in a cool, dry place away from any sunlight or heat.
