Gravy is a much-loved sauce that pairs well with a plethora of meals, making many dishes come together in harmony. However, the culinary experts at Delish have shared some helpful tips to make sure you make the best gravy out there, and how to avoid messing it up when cooking.
A cheat’s gravy recipe may be made using granules or stock, but Delish believes the best way to make your gravy is by using the meat drippings from your centrepiece. You can use anything from chicken, turkey or beef as the base. To make gravy stand out, there are a few ingredients that can take it to the next level.
In a TikTok video from November 2024, Delish shared its five top tips to make the “best gravy of your life”. Firstly, pour all of the luscious meat drippings into a pan – don’t make the gravy in the roasting tin.
Use a spoon or a baster to skim off the fat from the juices. If you have any drippings stuck to the pan, just use some room temperature stock to loosen them and scrape them off with a spatula.
Instead of relying just on the meat juices, Delish suggested a small number of ingredients that can really elevate your normal gravy. Think about adding some chopped onions, herbs like rosemary, thyme or sage.
Delish also recommended adding a splash of soy sauce to the pot for a salty and umami kick.
Plus, if you like your gravy thick, thicken it up by making a roux rather than leaving your gravy to boil on the stove.
To make sure your gravy is not overly salted, leave any seasoning to the end. This way, you’ll be able to season with salt as needed once you’ve tasted the sauce.
