Beans on toast is much tastier if you stop making it with 1 common ingredient

Beans on toast may seem like the easiest meal to make, but there’s actually a very simple way to make it taste even better. Watson, a cook also known as Thee Burger Dude, has shared a big mistake people make when preparing beans on toast is using white bread to make this comfort food recipe.

He said: “I found that using plain white bread resulted in soggy bread, no matter how much I toasted it. I really prefer a good sturdy sourdough.”

It may sound bizarre, but white bread you buy from the supermarket tends to be too soft, even after toasting it, and will quickly soak up too much of the tomato sauce.

This means the white bread will fall apart and become mushy very quickly which makes beans on toast more difficult to eat.

White bread also does not toast very well since it is so thin and you usually get uneven toast that is burned or dry on the outside while still being very soft in the middle.

It is also quite bland bread that is also lower in nutritional value compared to other bread types, so you will feel less full even after having a big plate of this comfort dish.

If you can, use a thicker bread like sourdough as it is much sturdier and will hold its structure better even if loaded with baked beans.

However, sourdough tends to be too thick to put in your average toaster to you may need to toast it in a frying pan. Just simply let it heat up and then turn it over after one side is cooked.

You can also simply switch to wholemeal bread as it is made with heavier flour which helps it toast more evenly and absorbs liquid slowly to it will not become soggy.

After switching up your bread it is also important to add a little seasoning or sauce to your baked beans otherwise they can come out of the pot tasting bland.

Watson said: “I think a lot of Americans fail to season these beans when they try it. I suggest using a bunch of seasonings to see what you like.”

It may sound obvious, but canned beans are often sweetened to balance out the acidity of the tomato sauce and help preserve them for longer, but it can often lead to them being a little flat.

Canned beans are usually loved by children due to plain taste but with adults it can often make this comfort meal really dull if you do not add anything.

The next time you make beans on toast, consider adding a few seasonings such as Worcestershire sauce as it helps cut through the sweetness of the beans to give it a richer and even meatier flavour.

You could also add a little curry powder or smoked paprika to give it a warmer and more aromatic taste. Have a rummage through your spices — garlic or onion granules taste amazing with baked beans as well.
