The books to read while you wait for the next Fourth Wing book

Fans waiting for the next book in the bestselling Fourth Wing series may be somewhat disappointed. Author Rebecca Yarros has announced that she has a rather busy writing schedule at the moment, and it likely won’t be published until 2027. While this may feel like a long wait, there are plenty of other books you can read to keep you occupied while waiting to find out just what happened following the cliff-hanger ending of Onyx Storm.

From more worlds with dragons, to characters bonding with animals and mythical creatures, and of course, enemies just hopelessly falling in love with each other, there are so many other fantasy reads out there. And these are just some of the books that will certainly leave any Fourth Wing fan happy.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

Fans of the romance genre have likely already picked up the A Court of Thorns and Roses series, but if you haven’t, then you are in for a treat. The series tells the story of 19-year-old Feyre, who is taken away to the faerie land across the border from her town after killing a fae while out hunting. As the story develops, there is plenty of romance and drama for readers to enjoy.

There are currently five books in the series, and with at least one more on the way (hopefully soon), this series will certainly tide you over while waiting for the next Fourth Wing book.

From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Another popular romantasy series is the From Blood and Ash series by Jennifer L. Armentrout, which is a vampiric enemies-to-lovers romance that has gone viral on TikTok. While I didn’t actually finish this series, it’s one that I would certainly still recommend to fans of romantasy — especially those that enjoy spicier books of the genre.

These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong

If you like enemies-to-lovers stories, These Violent Delights is a must-read. This Romeo and Juliet retelling, set in 1920s Shanghai, features everything from star-crossed lovers to a monster stalking the city’s streets.

The first book in this duology was actually one of my favourite books of 2020, and once you’ve finished this series, there’s a spin-off duology, Foul Lady Fortune, which is perfect for fans of the fake marriage trope.

The Immortals Quartet by Tamora Pierce

If Violet’s bond with her dragons is one of your favourite parts of Fourth Wing, then The Immortals Quartet by Tamora Pierce could be a great option for your next reads. Set in the world of Tortall, which was introduced in The Song of the Lioness series, The Immortals follows orphan Veralidaine Sarrasri (known as Daine), who has the ability to speak to animals.

This series, published in the 1990s, is such a fun read that you’ll still be thinking about it long after you’ve closed its pages.

Onyx and Ivory by Mindee Arnett

The combination of dragons, romance, and enemies-to-lovers (well, technically friends-to-lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers) makes this duology the perfect choice for any Fourth Wing fan.

Onyx and Ivory follow ‘Traitor’ Kate, a magic wielder who can control the minds of animals, and whose father attempted to murder the king… who just happened to be the father of Kate’s closest friend, and sometimes lover, Corwin.

Set in a world ravaged by ‘nightdrakes’, ferocious flightless dragons who are believed to only attack at night, a chance encounter sees Kate and Corwin reunited and forced to work together to survive when the drakes attack during the day.

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

Another book perfect for dragon fans is The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon. Just don’t let the size of this book intimidate you; it’s well worth the hours you’ll spend reading it. With everything you’d want from an epic fantasy, the Priory of the Orange Tree is truly one of my favourite books of all time, and one that I can’t recommend enough!

This book follows the point of view of four characters scattered around the world as multiple kingdoms fight to ally to prevent the coming of an ancient dragon, The Nameless One, who is set to destroy their world. From morally-grey alchemists, to dragon-riders, and members of secret societies, each character’s point of view brings you further into the world of the Priory.
