Field of Gold charged clear of ownermate Cosmic Year to give Juddmonte a one-two in the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas.
The grey was sent off the evens favourite after appearing to be unlucky in Newmarket’s version of the Curragh Classic.
Lacking a crucial mid-race gear change on that occasion, punters were never worried this time as Colin Keane’s mount cruised up to the leaders.
Keane, given the ride over Kieran Shoemark, asked Field Of Gold to accelerate with just over two furlongs to race and he quickened three-and-three-quarter lengths clear.
Harry Charlton’s first runner in the race Cosmic Year (4-1) overtook Hotazhell (9-1), best of the home team in third, for the silver medal.
And while the winning horse was predicted by the short odds, Racing TV presenter Tom Stanley was surprised by Field Of Gold’s pace as he galloped a mile.
“We came away from Newmarket thinking maybe he was done for toe,” he said.
“Here he has chucked in, just nice and casually, an 11.06 sixth furlong and a 10.82 seventh furlong. They are two quicker furlongs than he ran at Newmarket full stop.
“Whatever the reason he didn’t show his blatant speed at Newmarket, it wasn’t there but it was very much there today – on easier ground as well. It turns out he’s rapid.”
A third competitior in the Juddmonte silks, Windlord, set a pace for Field Of Gold to aim at and the market’s top choice was still on the bridle as many came under pressure.
As he raced away, bookmakers William Hill made him their 5-4 favourite for the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 17.
Keane, called up to take over from Shoemark after the defeat at HQ earlier this month, is expected to maintain the partnership.
“That’s not my decision but I wouldn’t see any reason to change it,” co-trainer John Gosden told Racing TV. “I’ll talk to Barry (Mahon) who manages the racing side for Juddmonte and take it from there.”
He added: “He’s quickened up well and shown a lot of class. The second horse is a very good horse, the third horse is a Group One winner, so I think the form is incredibly solid.
“Colin said cantering down he was relaxed and there were no instructions, I just said ride him as you find him.”
