Simon Porter revealed that they were asked to create the bespoke piece and take inspiration from HMS Glasgow’s crest. He said: “It was an absolute honour to see her wearing it. Against a plain navy background, it really stood out.”

It was further reported that the piece was “funded by two London livery companies, the Worshipful Company of Fan Makers and the Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors”.

Kate beamed with delight as she took part in the traditional ceremony and smashed a bottle of local Scottish whisky against the ship’s hull.

The princess conducted the traditional naming ritual at BAE Systems’ shipyard in Scotstoun, on the bank of the River Clyde in Glasgow.

Back in June 2021, Kate was appointed as the Sponsor of HMS Glasgow, a state-of-the-art Type 26 anti-submarine frigate, designed to provide protection to the UK’s nuclear deterrent and aircraft carriers.

Kate was heard saying at the event: “I have the pleasure to name this ship HMS Glasgow; may God bless her and all who sail on her.”

This was the first time the princess was given the honour of officially naming a naval ship.

However, she previously christened a new cruise ship, the Royal Princess, in 2013, a lifeboat in 2011, and a polar research ship, which was almost named Boaty McBoatface, in 2019.
