Britons have been told to pour a common kitchen item in the bins to prevent nasty smells amid the warm weather. The UK has seen a particularly hot and dry spring this year, with the conditions even prompting fears of droughts and hosepipe bans.
Britain is set for another balmy week despite wet conditions expected into the bank holiday weekend. London is expected to see top temperatures of 23C on Tuesday, with temperatures then remaining between 17 and 20C for the rest of the week, according to BBC Weather.
It’s a similar story in Manchester, which is expected to have a 21C high tomorrow and the mercury remaining in the high teens and reaching as high as 20C in the following days.
In warmer temperatures some household items will need extra cleaning to avoid bacteria building up and nasty stenches appearing.
London rubbish collection experts, Clear It Waste have shared various tips for ensuring that your home stays fresh, including using baking soda to stop your household waste from producing nasty smells.
According to the firm, warmer weather can contribute waste in household and wheelie bins decomposing quicker, which attracts flies and enhances the release of odour-causing molecules.
It recommends regularly washing bins with soapy water and disinfectant is as its vital for preventing odour and bacteria from building up.
Once the bin is clean, the experts suggest sprinkling baking soda into the bottom of your bin as it is a “simple, natural, and economical step which helps absorb odours and prevent the spread of the bin smell in your home”.
Clear it Waste says it costs around 65p, and as it’s a common cooking ingredient, you may already have some at home.
Citrus fruit peels can also be placedinside the bin to add a fresher scent, and like baking soda they’re also an eco-friendly alternative to harsh chemical products.
The firm also recommends wrapping up food scraps before disposing which helps reduce odours and spills inside the bin. Britons are also told to double bag any waste that’s particularly smelly or messy.
Additionally, keeping bins in well-ventilated areas helps make sure moisture and heat doesn’t build up, which will also reduce odours, the experts say.
