Sir Keir Starmer is understood to be facing a backlash from within his own party over a controversial new deal with Brussels – so today Express readers are being asked: Do you think it amounts to a betrayal of Brexit? The Prime Minister is expected to unveil a wide-ranging “reset” agreement with European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen on Monday. This would be the UK’s biggest move towards the EU since the 2021 trade deal.
Under the plans, the UK would align with European food standards and allow young EU migrants to live and work in Britain – prompting warnings from Brexiteers that it’s “the worst of both worlds”. Labour MP Graham Stringer said: “Dynamic realignment is definitely a betrayal because it’s giving everything up.” So what do you think? Vote in our poll and join the debate in the comments section. Baroness Hoey, a prominent Leave supporter, and former Labour MP, added: “Labour voters have not given up on Brexit – and Sir Keir will pay the price for thinking otherwise.”
Critics within the party say the deal could drive voters into the arms of Reform UK, particularly in Red Wall constituencies that backed Leave in 2016.
Sir Keir insists the deal is in the national interest and says it will boost defence spending and strengthen the UK’s role in European security.
But with the EU demanding a ten-year extension on fishing rights and potential oversight from the European Court of Justice, concerns over sovereignty are mounting.
