Avocado on toast is a healthy way to start the day, but many people mistakenly think it is a boring breakfast as they are not making it correctly. It may seem like a simple recipe but avocados are usually quite bland unless you know the proper way to bring out the taste.
Gaby Dalkin, a cook and founder of What’s Gaby Cooking have shared that a pinch of salt will unlock an avocados natural creaminess. She said: “Always finish your avocado toast with a sprinkling of chunky salt. It bumps up the flavour in the best possible way and adds a bit of texture.”
How to make avocado on toast properly
Avocados are popular as they have a smooth fatty texture, but their taste can be underwhelming, even when they are ripe, so salt helps enhance their flavour.
Salt will bring out a more buttery taste and will add a more crunchy texture to contract the avocados to make your breakfast much more enjoyable to eat.
However, is it essential to make sure you are first picking the best avocados at the supermarket and make sure they are ripe before making this breakfast dish.
Gaby said: “I tend to buy my avocados rock hard so they can ripen on my own kitchen counter without anyone else touching them. When they are ready, they should just have the slightest give to them.”
Ripe avocados will feel slightly soft, look dark green and underneath the stem should be green. If you need to quickly ripen an avocado, then try out the simple paper bag method, which will have it ready to eat in only a few hours.
Then, all you need to do is toast the bread until it is golden brown. Many people prefer to use chunky loaf bread for avocado toast, so you may be better toasting it in a frying pan on the stove if the bread cannot fit into your toaster.
To slice an avocado, all you have to do is cut it and then remove the pit. Scoop out the flesh and then place it into a bowl to mash it up with a fork for a few minutes until you get the texture to you like.
Gabby said: “Chunky avocado vs smooth avocado… it’s really a personal decision but I prefer it mostly smooth with a few chunks. If it’s too chunky, I find that the avocado falls off and no one wants that.”
Add the salt and some pepper to your mushy avocado but also make sure a little lemon juice as well. Lemon juice also helps enhance the salt to make avocado even more flavourful and will bring a bright zesty taste to the fruit.
Spread the avocado onto your toast and your breakfast will be utterly delicious. You can add any other toppings you like such as poached egg, bacon, smoked salmon or even chilli flakes.
Avocados on toast are very easy to make and can be customised however you like, but if you make sure to get the basics right by seasoning right, it will taste so much better.
