Washing machines stay mould-free if you do 1 simple task after a wash

Washing machines are used weekly or even daily, but many people do not consider that they also need to be cleaned regularly to function properly. It is very easy for moisture to build up around the door or inside the drum of a washing machine, which can encourage bacteria and eventually mould.

Mould inside a washing machine will affect how well your laundry is washed, which will cause it to smell musty and be less hygienic. Luckily, Lisa, a mum and founder of Move Mama Move has shared that preventing mould is very simple as all you need to do is take five seconds after finishing a wash.

How do you prevent washing machine mould?

Lisa said: “Leave the lid and the detergent tray open when the machine is off. This reduces moisture trapped within the machine by allowing for airflow.”

Leaving the washing machine door and detergent drawer open after doing laundry helps keep these areas dry which stops mould from being able to grow.

Keeping moisture away is the key to preventing mould so it also helps to leave the door or a window open, and even turn an exhaust fan on, as it will greatly reduces the amount of humidity in the room.

It may seem like common sense, but never leave washed clothes inside the washing machine overnight, even if you cannot be bothered hanging them up, as this is one of the common ways mould can spread.

Lisa said: “All it takes is 24 hours on a surface with moisture and edible options for a mould spore to grow.”

How do you clean a washing machine?

The absolute best way to stop mould growth is to simply give your washing machine a quick clean by wiping down the rubber seals around the door.

Do this once a week as it helps remove any dirt, soap residue and leftover detergent which mould can use as a food source.

You do not need any fancy cleaning products, as one of the most effective mould removers is simple white vinegar, which is antibacterial and can kill mould spores.

Lisa said: “Place white vinegar in the spray bottle. Pull out the detergent tray and soak in vinegar for at least half an hour. Spray the entire washing machine down, including the inside of the drum, the rubber gasket, the lid, and any other part you can reach.”

To clean the inside of a washing machine, simply place 240ml of white vinegar inside the drum and run it on a hot cycle. It is best to do this at least once a month to prevent build up.

Your washing machine will stay clean and mould free without having to use any harsh chemicals so you can do laundry without worrying about mould spores ruining a wash.
