UK road dubbed ‘craziest’ junction in Britain with 42 sets of traffic lights

A junction in Yorkshire has been branded as one of the craziest in the UK with locals left baffled at the system which has over 40 traffic lights installed. Grovehill Junction, located just outside the town of Beverley, in Yorkshire, has a whopping 42 traffic lights where five roads meet.

The road layout, first fitted back in 2015, has even been branded the “red light district of Beverley”. Locals even described the road as “a fairground” with one suggesting they avoided the route “like the plague”. YouTube channel @BeeHereNow visited the site, revealing that many believe the route was “confusing”.

They said: “Some people even call it the red light district of Beverley, owing to the fact that it has 42 sets of traffic lights.

“Essentially, it’s where two major roads connect and a third one comes in at the same point featuring five points of entry and exit. You can see why that would be confusing to planners and drivers alike.”

The road was originally a roundabout which was ripped up for the new junction system in 2015.

Restoration work on the road is believed to have cost a staggering £22million.

AECOM conducted a £5,000 audit on the site shortly after the new layout was opened, raising some concerns.

Experts stressed that the junction could be considered” over-populated with vertical elements” – namely the traffic lights.

Specialists warned this would “increase the risk of collisions occurring between a motorist and signal poles”.

Shortly after the work was completed, Howard Tomlinson, spokesperson from the Grovehill Action Group said he feared passengers risked being “knocked over”

He said: “The main concern is the layout and complexity of the junction – it’s like something you would see coming off a motorway.

“It’s like Spaghetti Junction. There are about ten sets of lights all close together and it requires drivers to be very alert and observant to use the lights properly.

“Drivers are stopping at red lights immediately in front of them but when they see lights go to green beyond those red lights, some drivers are setting off.”

After the route was changed in 2015, East Riding of Yorkshire Council defended the updates.

They said: “Grovehill is a major junction in Beverley, and the traffic lights are there to ensure the safety of all users of the junction, whether drivers, cyclists or pedestrians, and includes controlled phases of the lights for each group of users.es of the lights for each group of users.”
