As the cost of living crisis continues to bite at British families one council is giving £250 grants to those hardest hit.

As major financial troubles continue to plague many households, vulnerable and struggling households in Rotherham have been offered grants of up to £250.

Funding will come via the local council – Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council – from the £2.5m Household Support grant, with the money being awarded to the authority by the government.

The council’s Energy Crisis Support Scheme will issue grants to residents in Rotherham of up to £250.

These funds will be distributed through a number of schemes which includes food vouchers for school holidays, local council tax support top up, discretionary housing payments, provision of household and personal hygiene goods and support for care leavers.

The council is set to approve this funding and ensure it is fully utilised by March 2025.

“We don’t want anyone to be worrying about turning off the heating this winter because they can’t afford their bill,” said RMBC leader Cllr Chris Read.

He added: “So we’ve committed more than a million pounds of the Household Support Fund (HSF) this winter to make more crisis payments available to more residents than ever before.

“Whatever your age, if you just aren’t able to keep up with your gas or electricity bills this winter, please do get in touch and see if our crisis scheme can help you.”

Those eligible for Pension Credit can also receive support with the local team doing all they can to help any elderly people get the money they’re entitled to.

Rotherham council will also spend £45,000 to support care leavers as well as offering £60,000 to community and voluntary groups to offer financial support for vulnerable families over Christmas and New Year.

A further £50,000 will be used to provide essential household items with the cash also helping with food vouchers for more than 13,7000 children eligible for free school meals.

Households struggling with energy costs will also receive an additional £1.1 million with funds also being used to help around 15,000 households with their council tax.

The council also stated that any unspent funds will be redirected towards energy crisis support.
