Manchester United are reportedly in the ‘final stages’ of discussions over signing Matheus Cunha from Wolves. It is claimed that Ruben Amorim, who is a big fan of the Brazilian, is close to landing his first signing of the summer transfer window.

Cunha’s potential arrival is expected to be part of a major overhaul at Old Trafford. A tough start to the Amorim era is expected to spark an exodus of under-performing players, with several fresh faces set to arrive in their place. Cunha has excelled for Wolves, and it seems United will win the race for his highly coveted signature.

According to Brazilian publication Globo, all parties have now entered the final stages of discussions over a potential £62.5million transfer. Cunha is said to have been tempted by a switch to Manchester as he would be playing in a similar role to the one in which he excels at Wolves.

The 25-year-old would play in one of the No. 10 positions in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation, just as he has done predominantly under Vitor Pereira in the Midlands. United are determined to sign players who suit the Portuguese coach’s style, with some stars this season being played out of position.

Amorim is reported to be a big fan of Cunha and believes the Brazil international can make a positive impact. Arsenal and Newcastle have also been linked with the player, but it seems United will now win that battle.

Cunha has scored 16 goals for Wolves across all competitions this season. He is widely expected to leave the club for his £62.5m release clause in the summer.

If United do win the race to sign Cunha, it would represent an excellent start to the transfer window for Amorim. The Red Devils are anticipated to make wide-ranging changes to their squad before 2025-26 following a dismal couple of seasons.

United are extremely unlikely to finish in the top half of the Premier League, sitting 14th in the table with 15 defeats. However, there could be a reprieve if Amorim’s side win the Europa League and subsequently qualify for the Champions League.

Playing in Europe’s elite competition next season may help them attract big-name players to Old Trafford when competing for signings with the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal.
