It’s out with the old and in with the new as Netflix prepares to refresh its catalogue in May.

If you are an action lover, into your war films or just love a romcom, be sure to get your fix before it’s too late. Here are my top five picks leaving the streaming platform over the next few weeks.

April 21

No Hard Feelings

Jennifer Lawrence’s 2023 foray into raunchy comedy is an underrated gem. She stars as a bartender who’s down on her luck so decides to take on an unusual challenge when a wealthy couple hires her to swoon over their socially awkward son. The film was directed by Gene Stupnitsky and is an incredibly easy watch sure to make you laugh but you better be quick as it leaves on April 21.

April 29

Patriots Day

This emotional action film from 2016 follows Mark Wahlberg as police Sergeant Tommy Saunders. Based on real life events, Saunders rushes to aid those injured in the Boston Marathon attacks that took place on April 15 2013. The film reflects on the city’s courage in the wake of the terrorist attack and is well worth watching if you haven’t already seen it.

May 1

1917

1917 is a World War I cinematic masterpiece directed by Sam Mendes and inspired by stories told to Mendes by his grandfather, Alfred Mendes, who served in the war. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth and Andrew Scott, to name a few, it was filmed in a “one-shot” style. It received huge acclaim and won three Oscars as well as seven BAFTAs – including Best Film and Best Director.

May 15

Crossroads

This coming of age staple starring Britney Spears gets you feeling nostalgic. The film follows three teenage girls as they embark on a cross-country adventure to pursue their dreams, taking risks that are sure to change their lives forever. Written by Shonda Rhimes, the film will hook you in from start to finish. It is a rare chance to watch Spears in an acting role and has a star-studded supporting cast including Zoe Saldaña, Justin Long and Kim Cattrall.

May 16

Penguins of Madagascar: The Movie

The Madagascar catalogue has proven hugely popular and this installment is no exception. One for the family to watch together, it follows four male penguins who go on various missions and team up with a secret animal agency to take down an evil octopus and stop him from killing all of the penguins of the world and destroying the cycle of nature through time.
