A cleaning guru has shared a clever home hack which will leave your china plates and dishes looking good as new, without the need to throw them away. Chantel Mila shared her nifty trick using two kitchen ingredients to help minimise and remove the appearance of scratches.

In a recent TikTok video, Chantel explained how she uses a paste made from baking soda and washing up liquid to help with the problem. You won’t need any specialist tools, just a sponge with a slightly scratchy side. She promises the results will be visible almost immediately.

How to remove scratches

In her video, Chantel said: “Remove scratches from plates instantly using a paste of baking soda and dish soap.”

You can either mix the two ingredients before applying to the affected area, or add both directly onto the plate or dish. You’ll need more baking soda than washing up liquid.

Once applied to the scratch, gently buff in with a sponge. Rinse away the paste and leave to dry.

A paste of baking soda and washing up liquid can help remove or minimise the appearance of scratches thanks to the former’s abrasive nature and the latter’s cleaning abilities. As baking soda is a fine powder it provides a mild abrasive action.

When the two ingredients are mixed together, the pace can help scrub away any surface-level scratches gently without worsening the damage done to the plate or dish. Washing up liquid will also help to lift and remove any dirt or grease from the plate.

This will help to make sure that the area around the scratch is clean, helping to have a more effective polish.

Buttercup China advised washing your crockery beforehand, combining baking soda and warm water and testing the underside of the item to make sure the colour and design aren’t affected. The experts also shared how you can prevent scratches from appearing on your china.

They wrote: “Place your cutlery and white china separately in your dishwasher to prevent scuffing, and do not clean with abrasive products as this may make the scratches worse. If you’ve got white china and a stainless steel sink, try to avoid rubbing white plates against the metal rack as this may also cause scuffs.”
