Windows and glass doors can quickly become grimy in April, as the rain will stir up dust while wind carries pollen that can stubbornly cling to the glass. If you do not want to deal with smudged glass blocking light coming into your home, then TJ, a mum and founder of Measuring Flower, suggests you can make a very effective cleaner with just three ingredients.
She said: “I’m a cheapskate and like to make things of my own (and in my own way), I began experimenting with homemade glass cleaner recipes in search of one that would make my windows just as clear and clean as a commercial glass cleaner might.”
A big issue with many glass cleaners is that they will leave streaks behind as they do not evaporate fast enough, which means you have to spend more time cleaning.
TJ decided to try many different remedies to see what would work best, and to her surprise, the key to keeping glass sparkling clean was to add a little bit of cornstarch to her homemade solution.
She said: “Using the knowledge I had gleaned from experimenting with different glass cleaner recipes, I mixed alcohol, water, and cornstarch. Voila! I think I have found my perfect window cleaner.
“The alcohol disinfects, the cornstarch does something magical to make it streak-free and clear, and the water simply dilutes it.”
Cornstarch is highly absorbent and will remove any dirt and moisture on the glass, so only the cleaning solution remains. This means no residue is left on the glass, which prevents streaks from forming.
How to clean windows and glass doors without leaving streaks
You will need:
- 650ml of cold water
- 300ml of isopropyl or ethyl alcohol
- Two tablespoons of cornstarch
Method:
To begin, pour the water into a bowl. Make sure the water is cold to prevent the cornstarch from thickening and becoming a paste.
Next, slowly mix in the cornstarch, and once it is fully incorporated, add the solution to an empty spray bottle.
Pour the alcohol into the spray bottle, screw on the lid and shake it to mix everything together. If you think the cornstarch is settling in the spray bottle, then simply shake it again.
Then, spray the solution onto the glass and use a clean cloth to wipe it away. Your windows and glass doors will be sparkling clean in less than 10 minutes.
