Brits spend nearly £1,500 more on luxury ‘milestone’ holidays than regular break | Travel News | Travel

People spend nearly £1,500 more on ‘milestone’ trips than they do on regular holidays. According to research, the majority of adults have marked a significant life like an anniversary or a work achievement, by planning a trip away, spending as much as £2,650 on average per person. Two thirds are willing to stretch their budget for luxury accommodation, and 46% will fork out more for unforgettable dining experiences.

Meanwhile others will pay extra to upgrade their flights, while one in 10 spend extra money on photography or videography to capture the special moments. And it appears the trend for milestone holidays is only growing as 42% plan to go on such a trip within the next five years.

More than half have a big birthday on the horizon they want to celebrate with a special trip, this is particular popular for those turning 50.

Furthmore, 13% plan to reward themselves with a holiday after completing a major life project and 65% would prefer a holiday over traditional silver gifts to celebrate their 25th anniversary as a couple.

As well as wanting to mark these milestone life moments in a special way, many use these ‘milestone’ trips as an opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones and to indulge in a bit of luxury, or tick off a dream destination on their bucket list.

Paul Stokes, from M&S Credit Card, which commissioned the research, commented: “Holidaymakers today are increasingly choosing to mark life’s big moments with experiences.

“A special getaway for that big birthday, graduation or work milestone, whether here in the UK or abroad, is a great way to do that and really make memories that last.”

To afford these memorable trips, travellers typically start saving around 16 months in advance. The research indicates that milestone holidays are often more meticulously planned, with 57% spending more time organising the details compared to a regular holiday.

Two-thirds say this is to make the trip feel extra special, while 46% need time to carefully select the perfect destination.

When it comes to what’s most important on these milestone breaks, 33% want the opportunity to relax and unwind. However, 26% prioritise beautiful destinations with cultural significance, and one in five seek an adventure or activity they’ll never forget.

Paul added: “Planning for a holiday is an exciting time – and for some, just as exciting as the trip itself.

“By taking the time to ensure that they’re well prepared, holidaymakers can ensure they’re making the most of their holiday budget, whilst enjoying what is often, a once in a lifetime trip away.”
