Many Brits have dash cams installed.
After all, it’s easy to be enticed by their benefits, such as providing evidence in case of accidents, potential reduction in insurance costs and promoting more responsible driving behaviour. However, experts warn that incorrect installation can lead not only to reduced effectiveness, but also to legal troubles.
It’s critical for these devices to be positioned where they won’t hinder a driver’s view, as overlooking this detail could land motorists in hot water. In light of a recent surge in do-it-yourself dash cam installations on TikTok, dash cam specialist Kyung Ho Min, from Thinkware, has stressed the importance of checking your device.
The rise of this “DIY trend” on social media has car and safety professionals concerned, as many of these self-installation methods may skirt regulations and compromise safety.
Kyung Ho said: “TikTok videos showcasing DIY dash cam installations are growing in popularity, and it’s caught the attention of car and safety experts. They feature simple do-it-yourself dash cam setups for users seeking a cost-effective solution to car security.”
The expert added: “However, these shortcuts could cause serious risks, especially if safety has been compromised and regulations violated. In some cases, drivers could even be fined if dash cam installations fail to meet local standards.
“One of the biggest issues associated with these videos is that occasionally, the dash cams can obstruct driver visibility because of improper camera placement. UK regulations state that dash cams should be positioned outside the swept area of the windshield wipers, and ideally behind the rear view mirror.
“If improperly placed, dash cams can block a driver’s line of sight, leading to fines of up to £1,000, and points added to driver licenses, which would have a direct impact on car insurance premiums. So be sure to always ensure that placement doesn’t obstruct rear visibility and aligns with rear wiper zones for a clear view.”
DIY wiring may carry significant hazards as well. Some self-help guides propose integrating the dash cam directly into the vehicle’s electrical system, but mistakes in this process can spark electrical problems, drain the battery and even invalidate the vehicle’s warranty.
Further concerns emerge when incorrect wiring leads to overheating and potential fire risks, causing expensive fixes and lasting damage to the car.
Experts suggest that unless you’re adept at such installations, it may be wiser to let a professional hardwire your dash cam. Another safer route is opting for plug-and-play units that hook up to a USB socket or a lighter adaptor.
Without correct fitting, dash cams may not remain secure during a collision, potentially causing further damage and limiting their usefulness. Crucial footage could also be lost.
A badly placed dash cam might fail to capture the necessary angles for beneficial recordings. DIY enthusiasts should utilise a trustworthy adhesive, and regularly inspect the camera’s stability to prevent any hazards.
It’s also vital to ensure that the camera records a broad view of the road for maximum coverage and effectiveness. For those who already own a dash cam, or those new to dash cam configurations, it’s crucial to exercise extra caution with positioning, wiring and securing to guarantee the dash cam offers valuable protection without unnecessary risk.
Alternatively, professional companies are available to assist with your camera installation, ensuring it complies with local regulations and is set up correctly for safety.
