Former Great British Bake Off champion and author Nancy Birtwhistle revealed a simple way to combat tough armpits stains on clothing, especially when they’re white. The Bake Off winner appeared on This Morning with presenters Cat Deeley to talk about all things laundry.

She explained that sometimes a simple washing cycle isn’t enough to get rid of “crusty residue” from t-shirts and shirts. However, there is a simple homemade solution you can use to get those stains out of the fabric. Nancy said: “What you need to do, you need a plastic bag.

“You need good old bicarbonate of soda. Mix it in a bowl with water, just cold water until it’s really like a sort of milky consistency.

“And then don’t be afraid to put lots on under the arm. Pop it in a plastic bag overnight so it doesn’t dry out. And then the next day, a long, cool wash.”

Nancy explained that the hotter your washing cycle, the more likely you are to make the stains worse.

She also shared a way to prevent any pit stains from forming, with what she dubbed “a spray of basic magic”.

She uses a mix of washing soda crystals dissolved in water.

Nancy instructed: “Give it a spray on the underarms of your, or the collars on your shirts or the cuffs. And then put them in the washing machine.”

Nancy explained that the homemade remedy will help to dissolve any greasy residue left on clothes, helping to lift the stains.

However if you find yourself doing all the cleaning thoroughly and still find stains on your clothes, Nancy had one last trick up her sleeve.

She said: “A tepid overnight, soak in a washing soda solution which is sodium carbonate, washing soda crystals… Two or three tablespoons, in the sink, dissolve in hot water, but then cool it down to tepid, don’t put it in a hot soak and just leave it overnight.

“And that’ll dissolve away all of that.”

Richard pleaded: “We need yellow sun cream stain removal tips.”

Harris suggested: “The stains come from aluminium in most deodorants. Use a natural deodorant like Wild which works well but doesn’t leave any marks. Then you don’t have to worry about any of this.”

Another commented, “A drop of washing up liquid on shirt, collar and cuffs will lift sweat marks,” while Paddy recommended, “Don’t have that problem just put your wash on and when it’s halfway through his wash turn the machine off and let the clothes soak then later that day turn on finish wash close clean easy peasy.”
