Expert reveals one type of Easter chocolates could actually be GOOD for you

Millions of Easter eggs are set to be devoured in the coming weeks and your choice of chocolate could bring health benefits, according to an expert. Specialist optometrist Neil Laird said compounds found in dark chocolate can help promote good vision. Dark chocolate is particularly rich in flavonoids, which are natural compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Studies have found that chocolate with a high cocoa content can help reduce blood pressure, improve blood flow, and lower the risk of heart disease. It is also thought to support blood circulation to the retina, reducing risk of conditions like age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and glaucoma, Mr Laird said.

The specialist at Pure Optical explained: “Flavonoids work to shield and reinforce the small blood vessels found within the eyes. Better circulation means better oxygen supply, which is key to maintaining healthy retinal function over time.”

A small 2018 study involving 30 people found the clarity of their vision improved slightly around two hours after eating dark chocolate.

But a similar 2019 study involving 22 people  which looked for changes to blood flow in the retina found no effects.

Mr Laird added: “While more research is needed, initial studies suggest that dark chocolate may provide a temporary boost to vision.

“So if you’re struggling to read the fine print on your Easter egg packaging, a little dark chocolate might just help!”

Dark chocolate has a much higher flavonoid content than milk chocolate. It also contains zinc which plays a crucial role in transporting vitamin A to the retina, where it helps to produce the protective pigment melanin, Mr Laird said.

He added: “For the best benefits, go for dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa.

“If you prefer milk chocolate, just enjoy it in moderation. It still offers minor benefits, but with more added sugars.”

Mr Laird also cautioned that over-indulging can lead to weight gain and blood sugar fluctuations, which can have negative effects on eye health. “Chocolate should be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet,” he said.

“This Easter, feel free to indulge, but keep in mind that maintaining a healthy lifestyle, which includes a nutrient-rich diet and regular eye check-ups, is the best way to safeguard your vision for the future.”
