You may have already tucked your winter coat away, but it looks like you’ll be needing it again very soon. Frosty temperatures are making a return next week, with cold conditions expected to reach as far north as Edinburgh and as far south as Cornwall and Plymouth, according to the latest WX Charts maps. The maps reveal temperatures dipping below 0°C across much of the UK, including areas like Plymouth that are typically spared from such cold spells at this time of year.

Another WX Charts map shows the chill is also set to reach as far east as Southampton and London on Thursday April 3. While April is usually a mild month, with Plymouth’s typical temperatures ranging from lows of 6°C to highs of 13°C, it seems this cold snap is set to make an unexpected appearance.

The average April temperatures in the UK typically range from a daily high of 12°C to a low of 4°C.

However, cold temperatures dipping below freezing are expected across Scotland, Wales, and parts of the Midlands and the North, including cities like Edinburgh, Cardiff, Birmingham, and Newcastle.

The typical minimum temperatures for April for the cities of London, Plymouth and Cardiff are usually around a low of 6°C for cities, and a low of 5°C for Edinburgh.

The Met Office’s long range forecast for Friday 28 March to Sunday 6 April reads: “The end of March will be characterised by changeable weather patterns.

“This will see a mixture of showers or longer spells of rain, these mainly in the north and northwest, interspersed with some dry and bright periods, especially in the south.

“Temperatures will mostly be near normal for the time of year. Into early April a good deal of settled weather is likely across the UK as a whole, with many areas dry under clear or sunny spells with light winds.

“Some periods of unsettled weather could develop at times, bringing outbreaks of rain and strong winds.

“Temperatures will likely be close to normal overall, though cold are possible where clear skies coincide with light winds.”
