Mattress stains will disappear with ‘game-changing’ method

Over time, mattresses can accumulate dead skin cells, sweat, and body oils, creating the perfect environment for dust mites to thrive. Martin Seeley, CEO and sleep expert at MattressNextDay, explained: “A typical used mattress can contain up to 10 million dust mites. These microscopic creatures and their waste can trigger allergies and asthma.”

That’s where the “pot lid method” comes in, with a surprisingly simple yet effective technique to tackle stains, dirt and allergens lurking deep within your mattress. Martin described the technique as a “game-changer for mattress cleaning,” adding that it works by using the flat surface of a pot lid to evenly distribute pressure, allowing you to gently lift dirt without damaging the mattress material. He explained: “When combined with a microfibre cloth and a mild cleaning solution, the pot lid acts like an oversized scrub brush, effectively lifting dirt and allergens from deep within the mattress fibres.”

The beauty of this method lies in its efficiency and gentleness, removing the need for scrubbing or specialised equipment.

“The pot lid’s size allows you to cover a larger area with each pass, making the cleaning process more efficient,” said Martin.

Its weight also provides the right pressure to work the cleaning solution into the mattress surface without oversaturating it.

This is particularly important for memory foam mattresses, which can be sensitive to excessive moisture.

Martin has outlined a simple guide for those curious about the practical steps.

Start by preparing a mild cleaning solution with warm water, a small amount of laundry detergent, and rubbing alcohol. For tougher stains, add a teaspoon of baking soda.

Then, dampen a microfibre cloth, wrap it tightly around the pot lid, and use circular motions to clean the mattress.

Martin recommends using light pressure and straight lines for memory foam to avoid pushing moisture too deep into the foam.

The method also allows easy spot cleaning of stubborn stains with white vinegar and baking soda before applying the pot lid technique.

Once you’ve finished, allow your mattress to dry completely, preferably in the sunlight, to prevent any risk of mould.
