In a candid appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show in the United States, Meghan Markle revealed what keeps her marriage to the Duke of Sussex “alive”. Referring to her husband Prince Harry, Meghan shared the advice she received from a parent while working as a nanny during her days at university.
Meghan Markle said: “I was a babysitter for two Irish Catholic families when I was in college, and one of the dads said to me, he’s like ‘You know, Meghan, when you meet your person one day I want him to say to you the same thing that I said to my wife when he got married which is, I vow to always date my wife.’ I told H that when we started dating, he goes, ‘I vow to always date you’.”
Meghan then opened up to reveal she believes she and her husband have “this connection” because of their vow.
The As Ever founder went on: “We have this connection, I think, because we’re so committed to treating each other the same way you did before you had a ring on it, before it was locked down — when you’re just courting each other and you can see all the good and joy in that butterfly period.”
As for meeting and marrying a prince, she said: “I mean, look, life is full of surprises. I did not expect to meet H and for this to be our love story and you know I’m very lucky. I am married to the funniest, sweetest, most charming… He’s an amazing father. And so, you know, I count my blessings because I have him and, also, I have a partner who is so supportive of me.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are the proud parents of Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three.
While on the show, the ‘With Love, Meghan’ host also revealed that there are some words that her children still say with a British accent – most notably, “Zebra”.
Prince Harry has supported his wife throughout her various passion projects since they got married in 2018 and subsequently quit their royal duties and moved to California two years later.
Last year, Markle launched her lifestyle brand — originally called American Riviera Orchard but rebranded to As Ever – and last week she debuted her Netflix cooking show, ‘With Love, Meghan’, the eight-part streaming show on Netflix.
The Duchess of Sussex appeared on Drew Barrymore’s breakfast show in New York on March 6, when the presenter handed her a picture of the late Princess of Wales.
Barrymore told Meghan how she was just seven when she met Prince Harry’s mother, but described it as the “honour” of her life.
