Pie shop closing after 180 years as Greggs about to open in same UK town | UK | News

A loved piemaker that has been serving the people of a popular UK town is going to close its doors after 185 years. Burchall’s in St Helen’s is a family pie and pork butcher shop.

It recently announced its closure date while thanking the customers for their support over the years. John Burchall, 75, the shop’s owner and the great-great-grandson of original owners Joseph and Elizabeth, has announced that the business is set to close later this month on Saturday, March 29. It comes as plans to open a drive-thru Greggs bakery in the same area have been submitted to the council, reports the St Helens Star.

The shop in the town centre has placed a sign on the window announcing the closure date of the business.

The sign on the door reads: “It is with regret that Burchall’s will be closing down on Saturday March 29. We would like to thank all our loyal customers who have supported us over many years. Thank you, J.B.”

Last year, it was reported that Burchall’s building was put on the market for £225,000. Back then, John had shared his plans for retirement but intended to continue trading into early 2025.

The shop is a popular destination in the town and also for expat Sintelliners from across the world, who frequent the shop while on a visit back in their hometown.

In November 2024, John received a Special Achievement Award at the Pride of St Helens Awards.

He told St Helen’s Star: “When I received the award that made me think of retiring from after Christmas but I couldn’t do it because of the tradition, that was weighing heavily on me.

“It was only after I decided on March 29 and I told the staff, my wife noticed it is exactly 30 years since my dad died and left the business to me. I thought that has got to be fitting.

“I have experienced a range of emotions and that is why I couldn’t make the decision at Christmas. When I realised it was 30 years for me that was a sign.”

“I’m sure word will get round and hopefully we’ll get good wishes. I am 75 and when I look round I just feel it’s time now.”
