A lawn expert has shared their top tips for getting the most out of your garden’s grass after spring has sprung. The Lawn Pack posted a video containing its four pieces of March advice that are “essential for spring success”.
Number one is “start your mowing correctly”, meaning making sure the frosts have finished and the grass is dry. It’s advised that you set your mower at the highest setting for the first cut, and “bring it down gradually”. The second tip is to aerate any waterlogged soil. It may be best to do some hollow tining – removing plugs of soil to improve drainage, aeration – if you have poor drainage.
The third tip is to apply iron sulphate and control moss. “March is a good time to kill off any moss, and iron sulphate will harden the turf and make it more resistant to disease, as well as give it a quick green up effect,” the account says.
The final piece of advice is to use the right fertiliser.
“When it’s warm enough, you want to have a spring fertiliser ready, which is typically high in nitrogen,” viewers are told.
“Or, if you’re seeding, make sure you’ve got seeding fertiliser, as spring fertiliser won’t be suitable.”
In addition, it is important to have your mower serviced as “you want to give your lawn the best possible start, which means giving it the best possible cut”.
A viewer asked: “Iron sulphate to kill moss? How long before scarifying? I tend to wait a few weeks as in Scotland its colder and wetter.”
The Lawn Pack replied: “1-2 weeks before scarifying. Allows it to fully turn black although you’ll see results in as little as 15 mins.”
Another account commented: “Have a lawn that’s infested with moss? Am worried about using some stuff that will brown the lawn.”
The content creator advised: “You could just try raking it all out with a spring tine rake if you dont want to use iron.”
