Robert Pattinson is set to dazzle audiences with his unique accents in the upcoming sci-fi comedy, Mickey 17, which hits cinemas this Friday (7 March).
Directed by Oscar-winner Bong Joon-ho, Pattinson plays Mickey Barnes, a man seeking to leave his troubles on Earth behind by joining a space mission to colonise an icy exoplanet.
In the film, Pattinson’s character works as an ‘expendable,’ embarking on deadly missions for research purposes, and upon each death, he is resurrected through a state-of-the-art cloning machine. The narrative follows his 17th and 18th incarnations, with Pattinson employing distinct accents for each.
The British actor recently shared at the Berlin Film Festival in February that his accent inspiration came from the 1996 Academy Award-winning movie Fargo. He told Variety: “I actually think I realised today what I was doing.”
He continued: “We were doing an interview earlier and Bong [Joon-ho] said one of the thoughts he was having for [Mickey] 18 was Peter Stormare from Fargo. And then I think how that went into my head was to do Steve Buscemi as [Mickey] 17. I kind of did it by accident, but I don’t think I realised that until today. I thought I was doing something else.”
The critically acclaimed film, penned and directed by the Coen brothers, is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
Fargo centres around Jerry Lundegaard (played by William H, Macy), a car salesman who concocts a scheme to have his wife kidnapped in order to extort a hefty ransom from her affluent father.
However, the plan goes awry when the hired henchmen, Gaear Grimsrud (Peter Stormare) and Carl Showalter (Steve Buscemi), commit a heinous murder, reports Surrey Live.
The film’s unique blend of regional accents, characteristic of Minnesota and North Dakota, where the story is set, adds to its distinct charm.
Over the past three decades, Fargo has cultivated a devoted cult following, with viewers on Rotten Tomatoes giving it an impressive 92 percent rating.
Critics on the same platform have awarded it a remarkable 95 percent score, summarising it as: “Violent, quirky, and darkly funny, Fargo delivers an original crime story and a wonderful performance by [Frances] McDormand.”
McDormand’s outstanding portrayal of the police chief tasked with solving the murder earned her the Oscar for Best Actress.
Fargo also secured the award for Best Screenplay and garnered an additional six nominations, including a nod in the prestigious Best Picture category. The film’s immense success paved the way for a TV series adaptation, spearheaded by screenwriter Noah Hawley.
