British households can “reduce” their energy bills “significantly” by avoiding leaving on standby mode two household appliances. The team at Eclipse Energy has pinpointed the appliances that should be switched off entirely when not in use, branding them the “worst” to leave on standby.
With “standby” the experts refer to appliances being plugged in with the socket switched on despite not being in use. Televisions, the experts said, are “one of the worst appliances to leave on standby”, according to the energy gurus, reports Birmingham Live. TVs can use up to 20 watts of energy when left on standby mode, which can accumulate over time.
They added: “If you switch off your TV completely when you’re not using it, you could save around £30 per year on your energy bill.”
Satellite TV boxes also consume a “significant amount” of energy when left on standby.
Devices such as Sky boxes or Virgin Media boxes can also drain a “significant amount” of energy when left on standby.
By turning them off, you could potentially save around £20 annually on your energy bill.
The experts stated: “By turning off these appliances completely instead of leaving them on standby, you can reduce your energy bills significantly as well as your carbon footprint.”
Grandparents who have grandchildren visiting should also be wary of a third household appliance – gaming consoles. These devices, such as XBOX or PlayStation, are notorious for their standby energy consumption, with experts warning that they can use up to 45 watts of energy when left on standby.
When not using gaming consoles, households are urged to ensure they are switched off completely or unplugged from the wall. By doing so, “you could save around £30 per year on your energy bill”.
