Tile grout in kitchens and bathrooms can become laden with stains and grime, especially in a high-traffic area.

Tiles situated behind hobs, in showers and around sinks are particularly prone to stains such as limescale, soap scum, food splatters and oil residue.

Removing stains from tile grout often involves using specialist products, but these can be expensive and smell pungent.

A cleaning expert has shared a simple method for whitening grout that does not involve using pricy products. It involves using a household staple you likely already have in your bathroom.

Cleaning expert Manish Jain, founder of the Ministry of Cleaning, suggests using toothpaste to whiten dirty tile grout.

He exclusively told Express.co.uk: “If your tiles need some attention, apply a small amount of white toothpaste to an old toothbrush.

“Scrub the grout lines and then rinse. Just like baking soda, toothpaste is a mild abrasive which lifts grime and even whitens the grout!”

Most people have toothpaste at home, but it’s essential that the toothpaste you use is a white, non-gel formula.

Boots Everyday Total Care Travel Toothpaste costs 50p, and Sainsbury’s Toothpaste costs 60p.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to use toothpaste, Mr Jain recommended vinegar and Fairy Liquid.

He said: “You can also mix vinegar and Fairy Liquid together to create a soapy solution that can be sprayed on tiles.

“Leave it for 10 minutes and then wipe. The vinegar dissolves limescale while the soap removes any grime.”
