Plant expert Alex from the gardening nursery Be Green said peace lilies can “thrive” by understanding the growth requirements of the flower-like spathes.
While peace lilies have lovely green foliage, many houseplant owners want their plants to produce pretty white blooms.
As spring approaches, it’s key to do all that you can to encourage plant growth.
There is one common mistake, however, that could be preventing the peace lily from flowering.
According to Alex, peace lilies are “sensitive to extreme temperature fluctuations,” so keeping the plant away from draughts and heating sources is key.
He elaborated: “Avoid exposing them to temperatures below 13C as it can damage the foliage and hinder growth.”
This might be particularly tricky if you find it difficult to maintain an even temperature in your home, especially during chilly nights or when you’re away.
If you cook a lot, the kitchen tends to be one of the warmest rooms in the house.
The steam created by cooking will also be welcomed by the peace lily plant, which loves humidity.
Bear in mind that peace lilies require bright, indirect sunlight to flourish and they must be watered adequately.
Alex expanded: “From my experience, one important factor that greatly affects the growth of peace lilies is the level of light they receive.
“They prefer moderate or medium light conditions, avoiding strong, direct sunlight.”
A peace lily placed in a very bright room is at risk of burning; this will be obvious as the leaves turn yellow in colouring.
Alex added: “When it comes to watering, it’s important to strike the right balance. Peace lilies prefer to be evenly moist, but not waterlogged.
“A good rule of thumb is to allow the top two-thirds of the soil to dry out before watering again.”
Another way to water your peace lily is to wait for its dramatic flop when it’s feeling thirsty.
When you see a wilted-looking peace lily plant, simply water it to make it perk up quickly.
