Lawns can do with a helping hand to get them ready for spring, much like other garden plants.
Lawn care jobs right now involve aerating, scarifying and tidying to help the grass regenerate and grow strongly.
However, there is another task gardeners can do – fertilising their lawns. This can be done with coffee grounds, according to experts at Lilydale Instant Lawn.
They said: “Ever wondered if coffee grounds are good for lawns? The answer is a resounding yes!
“Coffee grounds are an excellent, eco-friendly way to give your lawn a nutrient boost. They are rich in nitrogen, which is a crucial element for grass growth to make them healthier and greener than ever.”
The organic material can improve soil health during the dormant season and prepare it for spring and summer.
It’s a slow-release fertiliser, the opposite of most synthetic products. This allows your lawn to benefit from the nutrients for a longer period, ensuring stronger turf for longer.
The experts added: “Sprinkling coffee grounds on the lawn in winter can help maintain soil quality and prepare your grass for a robust spring growth
“By incorporating coffee grounds into your lawn care routine, you can enjoy a greener, healthier lawn while also recycling waste.”
To apply coffee grounds, simply throw them out there and let them lay where they fall.
The worms will work at them to break them up or they’ll eventually get spread when you carry out your first mow of the year.
Alternatively, you can mix them in with the water when irrigating your lawn. Mix about 500g per 20 litres of water.
A third option is to make a bucket spreader. Drill several quarter-inch holes in the bottom of a small bucket. Put the coffee grounds in the bucket and carry it back and forth across the lawn shaking out the grounds.
It is recommended to reapply coffee grounds every month or two to enjoy a thick, green turf.
