Not only do mattress stains affect the appearance of your room, but they can also lead to lingering odours that make it hard to enjoy a restful night’s sleep.

The good news is that tackling these marks doesn’t require expensive cleaning products or complicated methods.

In fact, a simple tip could work wonders to restore your mattress to its former glory.

And no, it doesn’t involve steam cleaning or harsh chemicals that could potentially harm your mattress.

For sweat stains, cleaning expert Andrew Seed, managing director of The Odd Company, suggested a simple yet highly effective solution; a £3 hack that involves creating a soapy solution with hydrogen peroxide.

Gently blot the stain with a clean cloth, then apply the hydrogen peroxide solution and let it sit for a bit.

Andrew explained: “A simple soapy solution with hydrogen peroxide can work wonders on discolouration and odours.”

Hydrogen peroxide can be bought from Amazon for £2.99 for 30ml or £15.99 from eBay for five litres.

For stubborn stains, Andrew recommends an enzymatic cleaner to break down the sweat without damaging the fabric and “leaving your mattress fresh and clean.”

This method is not only budget-friendly, but it also doesn’t involve the risks associated with steam cleaning or harsh chemicals.

If you’re dealing with sweat stains, it’s a simple fix that can make a noticeable difference in your mattress’ appearance and smell.

To keep your mattress smelling fresh after cleaning, Seed recommends using baking soda as a go-to odour remover and freshener.

“Simply pour baking soda over the mattress, let it sit overnight, and then hoover it up the following day. You can add essential oils if you wish,” he suggested.

Andrew also warned that many people are turning to steam cleaning their mattresses in hopes of removing stains, but this might not be the best option.

In fact, steam cleaning can worsen issues like mould, which not only reduces the lifespan of your mattress but can also pose serious health risks.

Mould doesn’t just cause discomfort; it could lead to respiratory issues, skin irritation, headaches, and worsening of issues like asthma.
