Valentine’s Day is just days away and if you’re stuck for plans with your partner, why not try a weekend away?

If the traditional city of love of Paris doesn’t do it for you, why not try one of the up and coming destinations that’s vying for Paris’s crown – the Serbian capital of Belgrade.

According to new research conducted by global travel booking platform, Omio, Belgrade has experienced a 203% increase of searches for hotels in the past month, while ‘hotels in Paris’ have only seen a 12% increase.

If you or your better half are a history buff, then you’ll relish in all that Belgrade has to offer, from the Belgrade Fortress to the National Museum, there is lots to see and even more to learn.

Belgrade Fortress is an unmissable attraction for history lovers.

It was the core and the oldest section of the urban area of Belgrade. For centuries, the city population was concentrated only within the walls of the fortress, so it is truly the birthplace of the city.

Founded in the 3rd century BC it was conquered by the Romans and today stands as a gorgeous monument and military museum where you can explore the history of the city.

If you’d rather a more relaxed trip wandering through Belgrade, then you must visit Knez Mihailova – the main pedestrian and shopping zone in Belgrade, protected by law as one of the oldest and most valuable landmarks of the city.

One of the most beautiful pedestrian zones in South East Europe, the street is constantly filled with a buzz of people and tourists exploring.

There’s a mix of modern shops and stalls selling souvenirs and keepsakes as well as delicious restaurants and bars perfect for refuelling after shopping.

Belgrade also has the added bonus of being cheaper than many European cities so if price is a concern, it could be perfect.

A point of beer will set you back around £2, and a three-course meal for two is just £35, according to Numbeo, the world’s largest cost of living database.

If you want to take a last minute trip to this beautiful capital city then Skyscanner currently has flights direct from the UK to Belgrade leaving on the 13th and returning the 16th of February starting as low as £139 return.
