Harry Kane has been linked with a shock move to Arsenal after it was revealed that he has a cut-price release clause in his contract at Bayern Munich. Kane made a £100million switch from Tottenham to Bayern in the summer of 2023 and has since scored an impressive 70 goals in 72 appearances across all competitions.
Despite his goal-scoring prowess, Kane’s efforts have not resulted in silverware, which was his primary reason for moving to the Allianz. Currently leading the Bundesliga scoring charts, Kane signed a four-year deal upon joining the German giants, but it seems they may now struggle to retain him.
It has come to light that Kane’s contract includes a clause allowing for a potential Premier League return. The clause was valued at £67million in the recent winter transfer window, with the price expected to drop to £54m next January.
Arsenal legend Paul Merson has urged the Gunners to seize this opportunity. Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson said: “Arsenal will buy him,” and when questioned about his certainty, he added: “Why not? £64m, why not? Sol Campbell did [make the move]. People will go ‘Oh he’s this age and that age’ but Arsenal need now.”
He continued: “If Arsenal haven’t won the League, you’ve got to take a chance. You’ve got to take a chance, buy someone that’s proven. I wouldn’t be surprised, and when you’re Harry Kane and you’ve been told you can go for £64m, there’s only a couple of teams who could buy him.
“Maybe Tottenham will buy him back but he’ll have to win something at Bayern Munich to go back to Tottenham. If you’ve not won anything at Bayern Munich, you’re not going back to Tottenham to win nothing.”
Despite his successful tenure with Spurs, Kane is reportedly settled in Germany and isn’t keen on a return to the Premier League anytime soon. The 31-year-old made his intentions crystal clear last year when he asserted his commitment to Bayern: “I’m really enjoying my experience in Germany. It was a step that I needed in my career for a fresh stimulus, a fresh challenge and new surroundings and I’m really happy that I made the move,” he declared.
“My future is at Bayern Munich. I have a four-year contract. I’m enjoying it and hopefully, I will be able to make something special happen this season. If not, I’ll be ready to go again in the summer and turn things around.”
