How to cook better bacon using 1 ingredient without oil or frying

Cooking bacon on the hob in oil is not the healthiest option, and it can cause quite a mess.

If you want to save time cleaning the hob and ditch the oil, you can still get the same results, if not better, when using another method that’s been dubbed “life-changing” by food enthusiasts at Homemaking.

The key to cooking bacon with this recipe is to use the oven and one common kitchen staple – flour.

The experts said: “I was informed of this secret for achieving the crunchiest bacon, and I must say, this is the right way to make bacon.

“It requires some flour and a fair amount of time, but the outcome is, of course, rewarding and life-changing.

“To achieve the perfect crispy bacon every time, all you need to do is season your bacon with a little flour and refrigerate it to chill before cooking.”

So, why the flour? Well, this ingredient helps soak up some of the excess fat in bacon so that “it can get crispy faster”.

Also, it prevents the bacon from curling as much, giving you “nice, straight strips of bacon”.

Although all-purpose flour is recommended, you can try other kinds of flour, such as rice flour or cornstarch.

If you want to get the best results it’s worth prepping the bacon overnight or a few hours prior.

To do so, cover each bacon strip in flour and shake off the excess before placing them on a lined baking tray so that the bacon pieces are not touching.

If you need to layer the bacon, put a sheet of parchment paper between each layer. Cover the tray with an additional layer of grease-proof paper.

If you’re not cooking the bacon right away, put the tray in the fridge. To cook the bacon, preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas Mark 6.

Take the bacon out of the fridge, remove the covering, arrange the bacon in a single layer and cook the bacon in the preheated oven for about five minutes.

Using tongs, flip the bacon slices over. Bake for an additional five minutes, or until the bacon is crispy and evenly browned.

Once the bacon is golden brown and super crispy, transfer it to a paper towel-lined plate to soak up the excess oil.
