Josh Allen’s resilience shone through despite grappling with the disappointment of yet another defeat to Patrick Mahomes.
In the nail-biting AFC Championship Game, both marquee quarterbacks put up a stellar show for their teams, but ultimately, it was Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs who emerged triumphant with a 32-29 win.
This marked the fourth playoff occasion where Allen and his Buffalo Bills have succumbed to the Chiefs. The 28-year-old signal-caller was visibly disheartened when addressing the media but remained resolute, asserting that the Bills must topple the reigning champions to be part of the elite.
“It’s not fun,” Allen said to journalists post-game. “To be the champs, you’ve got to beat the champs and we didn’t do it tonight.”
Despite trailing by three points late in the game, Allen confessed he still felt “good” and “relaxed” about the Bills’ odds.
With a final opportunity to tie the game with a field goal, they had two minutes left in the fourth quarter. Under pressure from the Chiefs’ defense, Allen launched an astonishing pass to tight end Dalton Kincaid, who was momentarily open.
Although it seemed Allen had delivered a catchable ball, the 25-year-old Kincaid failed to secure it, leading to a turnover. However, the contest was far from over for Buffalo as they could still have forced a turnover from the Chiefs.
As the clock ticked down in the fourth quarter, with the Chiefs searching for a breakthrough, Mahomes connected with Semaje Perine to secure the vital first down that sealed the game.
Mahomes then ran down the clock while cameras caught a glum-looking Allen on the sidelines as he watched his adversary advance to another Super Bowl.
Allen managed 237 yards and completed 22 of his 34 passes, along with two touchdowns in the defeat.
Despite the disappointing season conclusion, the star quarterback was full of admiration for his team’s efforts, particularly their near victory over the reigning champions.
“I got so much pride in our guys,” an emotional Allen expressed to journalists. “Showing up each and every day, working as hard as they can. The guys truly adopted what we talked about this year, going into it. Love, love these guys.”
Mahomes reciprocated the accolades, telling CBS Sports how awestruck he was by the Bills’ tenacity with Allen at the helm.
“I have so much respect for Josh, man,” Mahomes said. “He’s a true competitor, a true warrior. A great football player. They always come down to the wire. Luckily we were on the winning side this time.”
