Mounting cost pressures and shifting footfall trends are forcing household brands to close their doors throughout October and at the start of November 2026. Stationery chain TG Jones has been among the hardest-hit name on Britain’s high streets this October, shuttering branches from York to Stratford-upon-Avon. The brand announced a sweeping 150-store restructuring scheme that is stripping in-store Post Office counters from town centres. Meanwhile, discount giant B&M is preparing to axe a sprawling 20,000-square-foot store in Liverpool within days, leaving Merseyside bargain hunters forced to go elsewhere.
At the same time, fashion and homeware favourite TK Maxx will leave its long-standing site in Worthing’s Montague Centre next week. But it’s not all doom and gloom, as the retailer will move into a nearby vacant former Poundland unit. Addressing the wave of 2026 closures, Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the Centre for Retail Research, said: “The problems of changed customer shopping habits, inflation, rising energy costs, rents and business rates have continued and forced many retailers to cut back even more strongly.”
