A 19-year-old driver’s fashion choice to wear a T-shirt about not being sober backfired after he was arrested for driving under the influence in Monterey County.

The California Highway Patrol on Monday shared multiple images in a post on social media from the DUI arrest of the underage driver, according to the law enforcement agency.

One shot showed the teen wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the words “This is no time to be sober.”

The other picture showed a close-up photo of the teen blowing into a breathalyzer device, which determines a person’s Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC).

“If you’re under 21, the message is simple: don’t drink and always stay sober behind the wheel,” the post from the CHP read.

“Driving under the influence puts your life and the lives of others at risk. One bad decision can have lasting consequences.”

There was a ton of reaction on social media to the department’s post, with many people mocking the teen’s choice. Instagram/@chp_monterey

“Make responsible choices, stay sober, and never get behind the wheel impaired,” it added.

There has been no other information provided as to the teen who was arrested.

“That shirt aged like milk,” one person wrote.

“A man of his word,” another added.

Others claimed the consequences for DUI’s aren’t strict enough to get people to stop committing the crime.

“There needs to actually be consequences to actions instead of a slap on the wrist for DUI drivers,” a person wrote on the CHP’s Facebook post.

“He will most likely end up driving drunk again and putting others at risk. They typically end up injuring or killing someone else and never themselves. Monterey county is known for DUI drivers.”

In 2024, the Monterey County District Attorney’s office filed close to 2,200 DUI cases, including 149 DUI drug cases and 33 DUI combined alcohol and drug cases, according to the county.

In California, as well as many other states, it is illegal to drive with a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher, per AAA.
