The 49ers shocked just about everybody with their 27-7 beatdown of the Rams in Week 1.
The Super Bowl favorite Rams were dubbed as the NFC’s team to beat before they had even played a single snap. Why?
Because the Rams had assembled a super team — on paper. The additions of Myles Garrett, Trent McDuffie and Aaron Donald made the squad a juggernaut and the Rams were treated as such before the season even began.
The 49ers were gravely underestimated and Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young made it clear that anyone who overlooked San Francisco were fools.
“You’ve got 5 Hall of Famers on that football team and if healthy, they can be in the mix with anybody anytime. That’s a fact,” Young said on The Rich Eisen Show.

While the 49ers have been a solid team in the past, their injury-riddled history has largely given NFL fans a reason to disregard San Francisco as a Super Bowl contender.
Make no mistake, the Rams are and will be a good team. Their Week 1 dud in Australia was likely an outlier, but that shouldn’t take away from the 49ers’ display of dominance.
Young evidently believes a healthy 49ers squad will be Super Bowl contenders in 2026 and San Francisco certainly proved what they’re capable of in Australia.
