Manchester United will reportedly pay an additional fee on top of their £8.3million compensation package to secure the appointment of Ruben Amorim early.
The Red Devils were set to wait until the end of the month in order to get Amorim through the door, as a result of a 30-day notice period inserted into his contract with Sporting, allowing the Portuguese giants time to find his replacement.
But instead Amorim will take just 10 days after Friday’s announcement that he will succeed Erik ten Hag, giving interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy just two more games in charge.
“Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football. Highly decorated as both a player and coach, his titles include winning the Primeira Liga twice in Portugal with Sporting CP; the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years.”
Sporting also confirmed the news of a higher payment than previously anticipated in their statement, writing: “Sporting SAD has reached an agreement with Manchester United FC regarding the terms and conditions of the departure of coach Ruben Amorim, in return for which MUFC will pay Sporting €11million (£9.25m)
“Additionally, Sporting SAD will benefit from the termination of credit rights, recorded as liabilities and contingent liabilities, as a result of the revocation and renegotiation of contracts relating to brokerage fees.”
Amorim is United’s seventh managerial hire since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 and Sky Sports News claim that he was the only candidate spoken to following Ten Hag’s exit.
The 39-year-old takes over a team low on confidence, however, languishing 14th in the Premier League title. Van Nistelrooy has provided temporary respite, however, guiding the team to a 5-2 Carabao Cup win over Leicester in midweek.
Van Nistelrooy will take charge of two more matches, beginning with Chelsea’s trip to Old Trafford on Sunday and then their fourth Europa League match of the campaign against Greek giants PAOK.
