As the Princess of Wales was speaking to the crowd lining up at Sandringham, she noticed her children and husband Prince William had moved away. “I seem to have lost my family,” she quipped to one royal supporter, which was received by laughs from the crowd.
During the comment, Lieutenant Colonel Johnny Thompson can be seen standing behind the Princess of Wales, paying attention to the interaction.
One fan commented on X: “Lovely to see Johnny Thompson is still around, looking out for the Princess of Wales.”
Another suggested: “He is there by request of the king to be a help to his darling daughter in law.”
The frenzy surrounding Thompson is reported to have intensified after King Charles’ coronation in May 2023. Thompson is a member of the 5th Battalion Royal Regiment of Scotland and rose through the ranks to become Queen Elizabeth’s most senior bodyguard.
He was promoted to Super Equerry to King Charles after the late Queen’s death over two years ago. After the social media frenzy, at the time, a Palace source told the Times, that while he “remains senior equerry to the King and the Queen” he will be serving in a “more executive and less public-facing role”.
In a major life update in October this year, it was revealed Lieutenant Colonel Johnny Thompson became engaged to his girlfriend Olivia Lewis, in The Times.
The announcement read: “The engagement is announced between Lieutenant Colonel Jonny Thompson, son of Mr and Mrs Alan Thompson of Morpeth, Northumberland, and Olivia Rose, daughter of Mr and Mrs Simon Lewis OBE of Primrose Hill, London.”
The aide’s fiancée, a PR executive, used to work for Charles and Camilla, while her father, Simon Lewis, was the former communications head for Queen Elizabeth during the aftermath of Princess Diana’s death in 1997, according to reports.
The couple have kept their relationship largely away from the spotlight but were pictured together earlier in the summer.
