Despite most Brits missing out on a white Christmas, the New Year could well bring buckets of snowfall.
According to forecaster WX Charts, areas of Scotland, northern England, and parts of North and Mid Wales could see flurries between January 1 and January 7.
In particular, the Scottish Highlands are predicted to see snow during this period, with the heaviest wintery downpours expected there.
Other areas that could be affected are the Central Belt of Scotland, the Borders, Northumberland, Cumbria, Lancashire, and Yorkshire, namely on January 2.
The Met Office, Britain’s official forecaster, does not predict a seven-day snow bomb over this period.
The weather service does not make location and time-specific snow predictions so far in advance as the conditions necessary to produce snow “can change hour by hour, across the country, or even a few miles down the road”.
According to the Met Office, there may be some “more showery conditions” around the turn of the year, which could bring “ice, sleet and snow” to northern and central areas. However, the forecaster has provided more specific predictions than that.
Today:
Outbreaks of rain and drizzle, accompanied by hill fog, will gradually spread eastwards across western areas throughout Monday. Elsewhere it will brighter to start with but cloud over later. It is expected to be cold in the east, before turning milder in the west later.
Tonight:
A rather cloudy and murky night for many Brits, with areas of patchy rain and drizzle, especially over hills in the west. A milder night for all, but windy in northern areas.
Tuesday:
A cloudy Christmas Eve for most, but some brightness developing to the east of high ground. Damp for lots of people initially, but rain becoming mainly confined to the northwest later. Much milder than previously.
Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:
Christmas Day and Boxing Day are expected to be cloudly and mild. Some patchy rain at times, especially in the northwest. Slightly cooler by Friday, with perhaps a little more brightness.
