ARLINGTON, Texas — Jasson Domínguez’s stay in the big leagues just got a lifeline.
The Yankees on Wednesday designated veteran outfielder Randal Grichuk for assignment to make room for Elmer Rodriguez to join the roster and make his MLB debut in the series finale against the Rangers.
Grichuk was batting .194 with a .535 OPS in 16 games, and though the right-handed hitter had fared better of late after an 0-for-15 start, it was not enough to save his job.
In ditching Grichuk, the Yankees ensured that Domínguez will stick around for a little longer — at least as long as Giancarlo Stanton remains on the injured list — after it had seemed like his call-up might be a temporary stay with Anthony Volpe potentially returning from the IL this weekend.
By DFA-ing Grichuk — who had made the team out of camp after signing a minor league deal — the Yankees can now send Max Schuemann back to Triple-A when Volpe is activated and keep Domínguez up to continue DHing against right-handed starters.
The Yankees can have Paul Goldschmidt start at first base against lefties, sliding Ben Rice to DH, making Grichuk more expendable in their current roster setup.
Domínguez can also serve as a fourth outfielder, as can José Caballero once Volpe returns to take over shortstop.
